Edgy Police Saddle Up For INSANE CLOWN POSSE

April McClellan-Copeland of Cleveland's The Plain Dealer is reporting that "police officers from Portage, Trumbull and Geauga counties were the unofficial welcoming committee [Friday, July 18] for loyal fans of the Detroit-based [cartoonish metal/rap band] INSANE CLOWN POSSE. The face-painted duo is the headliner for a three-day outdoor music festival at the private Nelson Ledges Quarry Park on Ohio 282.

"Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley pulled together officers from nearby counties to prevent violence that sometimes accompanies the group's performances. In 2001, INSANE CLOWN POSSE fans tore apart a stage in Toledo and trashed the group's sound equipment.

"Kaley plans to spend up to $80,000 for overtime and other expenses to head off any trouble before it happens. And the park's owner has hired private security to walk the campgrounds.

" 'Our law enforcement officers can't cover this event with the regular staff,' Kaley said.

"Kelly Rush, 35, who flew in from Dallas to see INSANE CLOWN POSSE, said the gatherings have a family reunion atmosphere.

" 'People follow them because they relate to them,' she said. The fans 'were all outcasts when they were kids. A lot of them were fat or were picked on because they look funny.'

"But to nearby residents, this family gathering is out of control.

" 'There are a lot of mad people down here,' said John Hamilton, who lives in a trailer park not far from the concert site. Yesterday, 'It carried on until 6 in the morning.' " Read more.
